Automotive Industry in Gear

"In recent years American consumers have witnessed global events that have made many think twice about the excesses of large, underused SUVs and trucks," notes Jesse Toprak, Director of Pricing and Market Analysis for Edmunds.com. "Crossover vehicles, which typically have the advantages of versatile SUVs coupled with the greater efficiency and smaller size of cars, thrive in this climate, and will likely be the fastest growing segment in 2005."

Toprak anticipates other fuel-efficient vehicles, including hybrids, will continue to gain market share and consumer attention in 2005. Toprak observes that, while 2004 was not the first year hybrids were on sale, "it certainly will be looked at as the year hybrids entered the mainstream, thanks in part to this year's gas price spikes."

Another reflection of this same trend is the resurgence of wagons. Today's wagons are smaller, more compact, and in many cases almost "sporty." Most manufactures are even calling them "sport wagons," and marketing them as alternatives to more traditional and stodgy sedans.

It's a crafty move in a more practical sense as well. Adding a wagon body style to an existing sedan platform doesn't cost an automaker nearly as much as designing a new vehicle from scratch. In addition, the two vehicles can share powertrain and interior components.

These industry developments, of course, have enormous implications for component manufacturers. The onus falls on them to develop new materials and processes capable of supporting increased performance while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption. In many cases this means solutions must be found that incorporate lighter construction, increased service temperatures, and more compact space-saving designs.

All of which explains why Advanced Forming Technology (AFT) was out in force recently in Stuttgart at the European Automotive Components Expo'05. The show included Automotive Testing Expo'05 Europe, Engine Expo 2005, Vehicle Dynamics Expo 2005, and Crash Test Expo 2005. AFT's presence included exhibits, sales support, and a booth.

Metal Injection Molding continues to be an attractive metal-forming technology for most automotive component designers and procurement professionals. For additional information on AFT product and services visit www.pcc-aft.com.
