MIM Puts Leading Edge on Tools

One example of metal injection molding's (MIM) potential contributions in tool design is the recently released ½" Impact Wrench (WR16SA) from Hitachi Koki U.S.A.

Manufacturing

Designed for extreme use, the wrench can be used in the most demanding fastening applications, such as tightening and loosening nuts and bolts in the automobile, shipbuilding, agricultural and construction industries. It's also used for heavy-duty tasks like assembling scaffolding and installing electrical equipment, plumbing, and HVAC systems.

Extreme use requires tools engineered for extra durability and strength – something MIM excels at – and the Impact Wrench is no exception. Hitachi's patented IDI (Internal Double Insulation) technology is used in the tool's construction, yielding an extremely durable tool with an outer shell wrapped in aluminum, not plastic, to withstand the high heat and stress resulting from extreme use. An injection-molded nylon core allows the tool to be double insulated.

Benefits

The resulting advantages of these MIM-aided tools combines the durability of an all-metal body with the advantages of double insulation of tools with plastic housings, which reduce heat and vibration to extend the life of the tool. These tools are also lighter and more compact, reducing user fatigue and allowing for flexible maneuvering in tight situations.

MIM is capable of producing an almost limitless array of highly complex geometries in many different alloys ranging from stainless steels, alloy steels, and soft magnetic materials, controlled expansion materials (low CTE), and custom alloys. Design and economic limitations of traditional metalworking technologies, such as machining and casting, can be readily overcome by MIM.

The wrench is just one of several professional grade tools and accessories that manufacturers can develop using MIM as part of the process to improve key areas of performance and construction.
