Death, Taxes, and Corrosion

Nothing is certain except death and taxes, or so the saying goes. If you are involved in the metal finishing industry you may consider adding corrosion to the saying. Despite efforts to coat and preserve metals, over time corrosion is inevitable. Research indicates that annual losses and maintenance associated with corrosion cost American industries over $276 billion. (www.corrosioncost.com)  Understanding causes of corrosion and applying the appropriate plating techniques can slow down the destructive process. Advanced Surface Technologies can analyze product and environment use then provide solutions that help customers avoid this costly problem.

There are different types of corrosion depending on how the metal is used. Corrosion can occur when fluids, other metals or air come in contact with the metal surface. Corrosion is more likely to happen with newly cut, connected or shaped metals. Parts sitting on a shelf can corrode if not treated and cared for properly. Stressed metals, such as those bearing heavy loads or in constant motion, are also susceptible to corrosion and cracking. Heat can cause chemical reactions and breakdowns in the metal and the protective plating. Heat may also make materials more vulnerable to build up of corrosive materials.

AST can assist customers with corrosion prevention. Solutions include changing the environment, storing materials in a different location or reducing humidity. In some instances a small change in the design of the part, such as removing a bend or joint, can eliminate the problem.

EN plating can be superior to pure nickel or chromium alloys by penetrating small voids, surface imperfections and the surface while providing excellent corrosion resistance. Coating thickness, substrate condition and surface preparation are important factors that determine both coating porosity and resistance to corrosive attacks. Physical and mechanical properties vary considerably from one EN process to another depending on the phosphorus content, the formulation of the bath and both the pre-plate and post-plate treatments. EN coatings offer excellent deposit uniformity and superior corrosion protection.

AST evaluates causes of corrosion and provides clients with cost-effective solutions. Before beginning a new finishing job, contact AST to do an environmental and usage evaluation to determine the appropriate plating solution.
