Colorado Time - Case Study

McCorkle Aquatics Center at the Ohio State University

The Ohio State University is well-known for its competitive athletics. The University sought a facility that could meet the needs of the athletic department as well as serve general student recreational needs. The resulting plan called for a comprehensive complex that includes the student activity center, a competitive pool, leisure and student activity pools, and an academic wing with classroom facilities.

"The OSU project is hands-down one of the most exciting projects that I have managed," said Colorado Time Systems Project Manager, Bruce Gregg. "The facility is amazing and the board, both in its size and clarity, is impressive."

The Team

Colorado Time Systems (CTS) designed the aquatic system and supplied the facility with all of the scoring, timing and display components.

The architect, Moody-Nolan, Inc., is one of the most successful design firms in the United States. Moody-Nolan offers services in architecture, civil engineering, and interior design, specializing in sports and recreation, healthcare, education, and major public works.

Gilbane Construction's core competency is in managing complex construction activities. Gilbane also helped invent the construction management delivery process.

Once awarded the contract for McCorkle Aquatics Center and Colorado Time Systems worked closely with Gilbane and Moody-Nolan to ensure a smooth installation.

According to the-ozone.net, "the McCorkle Aquatics Center succeeds in every goal set forth by its planners," and "it will definitely put Ohio State on the map as a host venue for important swimming events."

A CTS consultant reviewed the initial design, and made detailed suggestions on the placement of starting platforms, deck and wall plates and scoreboard/video display. The video display is a massive 10'6" x 36'9", or 128 x 488 pixel board, quite possibly the largest video display in a university natatorium to date.

The 25mm RGB full-color video display is capable of displaying a wide range of images that include: DVDs, scoring information, and live camera feeds with or without scoring overlays. With underwater cameras, the board can display an underwater view of events.

According to the-ozone.net, "We'll be able to show the races on the video board and we get an underwater camera when we have synchronized swimming, which is a great vantage point where people can see how much work goes into the sport," said Associate Director of Athletics Miechelle Willis.

"The end result is great, and as far as we know, OSU is very happy," said Gilbane's Brett Meyer.

The competitive pool at McCorkle Aquatic Center is 10 lanes, 50 x 25 meters. The competitive pool features:

  • Deck space for 1,200 people
  • Moveable bulkhead to reconfigure the pool
  • Two-foot, six-inch deep gutters to minimize waves
  • Diving well
  • Complete timing and scoring system that includes touchpads, touchpad caddy, relay judging platforms with Speedlights, Championship start systems, System 6 Timing System with Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Synchronized Swimming and Pace Clock software, QuickStart, and pace clocks.
  • 25mm RGB video display

"Credit to Ohio State for doing it right. Mr. Geiger, Bill Wadley, they certainly did it the right way, because it's state of the art, just like the Peppe Pool was state of the art back in 1938," said former OSU swimmer Matt Bretcher in an interview with the-ozone.net.
