The South East Asian Games were known as the South East Asian Peninsular Games until 1975 when the SEAP Games Federation accepted Indonesia and the Philippines as members. The name was then changed to South East Asian Games. The first SEAP Games were in 1959 in Bangkok, Thailand.

A total of more than 5300 athletes from the following countries will be participating in the coming 23rd Southeast Asian Games: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam.
