Dave DennistonAs an Auburn Tiger and member of the 2003 U.S. World Championship Swim Team, Dave Denniston always gave 100 percent. That drive and determination has proven crucial in his current challenge — a spinal cord injury that has put him in a wheel chair. In February 2005, Dave was sledding in his home state of Wyoming when his sled hit a tree and damaged his spine. During the last nine months, Dave spent time in physical rehab, developed a web site and started a motivational speaking company called Mind Over Body. Dave is also writing for Swimming World Magazine. New OpportunitiesDave Denniston's web site, has become a phenomenon, with people from all over the world posting encouraging notes to his message boards. Dave keeps a journal on the site, complete with photos and graphics, detailing his progress. The Auburn Tigers Swimming and Diving Team started a Dave Denniston Fund and hosted a fundraiser to help offset Dave's medical costs, which are significant. There are even Dave Denniston products for sale on the web site, including Send it Forward ankle bands, t-shirts, and some instructional swimming DVDs Dave made a few years back. A 2002 graduate of Auburn, Dave grew up in Wight, Wyoming, and moved to Colorado as a sophomore in college. He currently resides in Carlsbad, California, where he runs his Mind Over Body Company out of his home. Dave's mom is his manager / agent / bookkeeper. "I've had the opportunity to give quite a few talks," Dave said. "I've spoken at three universities — Kansas, Cal-Berkeley and Auburn — and club teams in Connecticut, as well as the Rotary Club here in Carlsbad." On his web site journal, Dave is candid about his rehab adventures, as well as the challenges he faces daily. All of Dave's entries are tempered with humor and optimism. "Rehab is going very well," said Dave. "The other day I took 76 steps in a row. I'm working on balance and technique right now." While rehab consumes most of Dave's time and concentration, he is excited about his new career as a motivational speaker. The name of the company says it all: "Mind Over Body: An attitude for the rest of your life!" "I've got all kinds of plans for the future," Dave said. Not the least of which is, of course, walking again. But until that time, he said, "I'm working on a new speech, and I'm writing for Swimming World Magazine." Among Dave's legion of supporters, he cites Colorado Time Systems (CTS). "I've always had a very good relationship with CTS," said Dave. "They've been great and have supported me through everything. They're one of the best swimming timing equipment companies in the country."
