Colorado Time - Case Study

Zeeland Swimming

Teaming up to use a joint facility and timing and scoring system makes two Michigan high schools' bottom lines happy while providing the athletes with a platinum-quality competition and training facility.

Zeeland East High School and Zeeland West High School in Zeeland, Mich., are two different schools with one successful swimming team and a new facility with a Colorado Time Systems (CTS) video board and complete timing system.

Mike Torrey, the coach of the joint team simply called Zeeland Swimming, says visitors to the unique aquatics facility shared by next-door neighbors Zeeland East High School and Zeeland West are impressed. It is not only the design that has people talking, but also the facility's high functionality for training and competition, a solid combination important to any team.

Installation specialist and CTS authorized service provider Jay Riegle of Riegle Timing in Ypsilanti, Mich., explains some functions desirable in both high school and collegiate level indoor swimming pools that are part of Zeeland's new CTS system:

  • Full Color Display Board (Zeeland's is 144x288 pixels; 23mm/pixel; 11'x 22')
  • 3 System 6 timers with software for swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and training
  • 2 Wireless Championship Start Systems
  • Touchpads and Caddy
  • 20 Quick Connect Deckplates
  • 10 Relay Judging Platforms with Speedlights, and Caddy
  • 2 QuickStart Pro Training Modules
  • 4 PC-Portables which function as pace clocks for training and water polo shot clocks
  • Underwater cameras
  • Judges' Terminals for diving and synchronized swimming

The pool was built to accommodate the two separate high schools, and has permanent seating for 552 plus space for another 100 temporary seats in the balcony.

Riegle said the upgrades utilized in the new facility like relaying judging platforms and live video from underwater cameras at dual locations (the start end and diving well) are advantageous.

One Happy Coach

"The Zeeland Public Schools have used CTS products for the past 27 years and I as the coach have supported their use for my 34 years of coaching," Torrey said. "One of the biggest factors in choosing CTS products is that they are used by a majority of the teams in our area with good results."

"West Michigan believes that swimming, diving and polo are high priority activities, and are treated accordingly," Torrey added. "CTS is large enough to continue to move forward with research in design and development to help the swimmers, divers, and polo players have a good experience with their sport."

Torrey said that a savvy Board of Education and school administration in their school district has enabled this kind of top-notch quality by envisioning and planning for the facility's use over the next 30 years.

"When we talk about building a pool, we talk about a 30 year program. Once it's built it cannot be added to easily." Torrey believes they've provided a situation for students, athletes and the community that will service "quite well," and yet will be easy to upgrade when needs arise. "The fact that there is an local authorized service provider in Jay Riegle is huge. CTS will do what they need to, to support good relationships with the school district."

The Buzz

Visitors like the results they get: times — the visual teaching tool they can use while they are at the pool. Torrey is grateful to have what they do at the new facility and is happy to share it. "We are a visual society. Everything is visual. All we are doing is staying on track," Torrey said.

Scott Kenny, CTS technical specialist, said, "The video board is as big as a billboard." He added, "It's a beautiful, very functional facility. This is now the premiere facility in the region. "

Their new scoreboard goes from live feed visual to data and back. Names go up on the board, then the display switches to video for the breakout, then flips back to data, displaying name and reaction time.

Torrey said another important item in their CTS equipment is delayed video. This is an asset both for audience excitement during competition, and as a tool in training. "A swimmer can do a stroke drill set going to and away from cameras, and it will show up on scoreboard," Torrey said.

As an educational tool for kids and coaches this information is invaluable for streamlining, faster time off the wall, etc. No one has to tell the athletes where improvement is needed. They can see it for themselves. Torrey sums it up what the system can do: "It makes us better coaches."

Mark Polansky, CTS sales consultant, said, "We are happy to be a part of Zeeland's new facility, supporting the coaches and athletes both in training and competition."

Polansky said, "Camps Services, the general contractors, were good partners in this project, and helped make it go well. They were professional and clear in their communication with us and with Zeeland."

Dane Frederiksen, Project Manager with Camps Services, said, "Our partnership with Colorado Time Systems has allowed us to raise the bar on creativity, in delivering state of the art aquatic solutions for our customers."

With the ability to teach in all formats, the facility could even be used for distance learning for large groups, or in lieu of an auditorium when speakers visit one school, to make room for the presentation via live feed for the other school next door. Torrey is certain that as time goes on they will utilize all that they now have more fully. "We are really learning."
