Manufacturers Avoid Internet Marketing….Or
Not
Manufacturers are just starting to pursue e-business opportunities. The
majority of manufacturing companies have been slow to embrace Web business
initiatives. According to the "E-Business Trends Report" a
survey of more than 80 executives at U.S. manufacturing companies was conducted
to understand this industry and the Internet.
"Manufacturing organizations typically have lagged significantly behind
in e-business," said David Smith, director of business development at
Parsippany, N.J.-based SVM, which provides Web services to businesses. "They
have put up a Web site and that is about it. Now, they want to take their
Web site from a static brochure to one that will provide a more interactive
experience for their customers."
A whopping 100 percent of participants admitted to having a website. But
they are using the site for the following purposes:
- 88% provide company information
- 70% generate sales leads
- 66% improve brand awareness
- 55% focus on customer service
Despite the increased awareness of internet opportunities, many manufacturers
don't measure the responses of their Internet efforts. They often pay
attention to certain areas but tend to ignore the big picture.
When asked about the barriers to a successful emarketing program, most participants
cited lack of strategy, funds, skills, and support. Participants that have
experienced a measure of online success credit strong technology skills and
a clear understanding of customer needs.
