Give Your Articles a K.I.S.S.

KissWhen it comes to writing an eNewsletter, the length of each piece is just as important as the information itself. Long, wordy, hyperbole-filled content is often the kiss of death. But a good way of improving content is by applying the K.I.S.S. rule – Keep it Short and Sweet.

Give it a K.I.S.S.

Jordan Way, Director of Business Development at Proven Systems, indicates, "the reason many people don't read eNewsletters is that they are considered too long, poorly organized or hard to read." People want to scan an article and not strain to read it. Applying K.I.S.S. can help retain a reader's interest. There are two steps to K.I.S.S. an article:

  • Short. Remove all unnecessary words, transitions, adjectives and more. Keep paragraphs to a few sentences. Make introductions and conclusions alarmingly brief. Remove any non-essential copy. Use bullets.
  • Sweet. Place the best information at the beginning and don't let up until the very end. Hyperlink to other sources whenever possible. And adding a small amount of appropriate humor can go a long way.

With a reader's attention being pulled in several directions, it is important to keep articles clear and concise. Remember that each word is important.
