Delivering Fast, Flexible Solutions for Quad/Graphics

Advances in the printing industry mean that many areas of a project use a high-tech approach, including photography, printing, mailing and integrated circulation services. Customers expect a higher level of quality and shorter turn around times. Large printing companies need a reliable network that can respond to changing needs and different levels of demand.

Customer Needs

Quad/Graphics, the world's largest privately held printer of magazines, catalogs and other commercial products in the Western Hemisphere, has 12,000 employees and annual sales of $2 billion. The company's clients include Time, Sports Illustrated and National Geographic.

"We were under significant pressure to implement a telecommunications solution within 90 days," said Dan Mueller, telecommunications manager for Quad/Graphics. "With office space in Manhattan at a premium, we had to move quickly on newly acquired facilities to accommodate the consolidation of our workforce there."

The Solution

Time Warner Telecom built out its Ethernet over SONET service directly to Quad/Graphics' new consolidated site in Manhattan to exchange data with the company's headquarters facility in Wisconsin.

Quad/Graphics uses ENLAN to interconnect four sites — Pewaukee and Sussex, Wisconsin and Manhattan and Saratoga, New York — exclusively over Time Warner Telecom's IP backbone. The service supports Quad/Graphics' data transfer requirements between these locations, with a true Ethernet interface delivering bandwidths between 20 and 100 Mbps, yet scalable to over 1 Gbps.

"Not only did Time Warner Telecom deliver services within that strict timeframe, its SONET and Ethernet services significantly upgraded our redundancy and reliability," said Mueller. "The ENLAN product matched up well with our strategy to provide flexible, scalable and cost-effective telecommunications solutions. The ENLAN service was an easy win over alternative non-Ethernet based communications links."
